Gwatkin Kingston Black Cider is a traditional style, single-variety, sparkling dry cider, crisp and full-flavoured with deep tannins. Kingston Black is a traditional bittersharp cider apple that originated in Somerset in the 1800s. Unique for having both luscious acidity and prominent tannins, it was described as being "allegedly the perfect cider apple" by Andrew Lea. It became widely planted across England and Wales, despite the tree itself being frustrating to grow.
Gwatkin Cider is based at Moorhampton Park Farm in Herefordshire's Golden Valley, where cider and perry have been made for centuries. The Gwatkin family pride themselves on making good quality, traditional, full-juice cider and perry, using 100% fresh fruit juice from unsprayed orchards, without any artificial additives. They have won a number of awards for their ciders and perries, including at Hereford's Beer on the Wye which, in the heart of apple country, boasts stiff competition of over 100 ciders and perries.
