Ross on Wye Kingston Black Single Variety Cider 2019 is made from the juice of the revered bittersharp apple. Fermented in fresh Kentucky bourbon oak, the result is a pétillant cider of vivid juiciness, aromatic vanilla, big ripe red apples, and a gentle tannic finish. It is complex yet easy to drink, fruity and well-balanced.
Kingston Black originated in Somerset in the 1800s and is described by Mike Johnson as "a great apple that always produces a good cider". Unique for having both luscious acidity and prominent tannins, it became widely planted, despite the tree itself being very frustrating to grow. Such was the quality of the cider, that many persevered, and here we have been rewarded.
The fruit comes from the orchards at Broome Farm, although sadly one of the apple trees the contributed to this cider came down in autumn 2020.
The Johnson family has made craft cider and perry at Broome Farm in Herefordshire since the 1930s and have won a plethora of awards, including BBC Food and Farming Winner 2019.
